FIRST NEW CONSTRUCTION PROJECT OPENS AT M SQUARE, THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND RESEARCH PARK
Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center becomes first tenant
COLUMBIA, Md. (May 13, 2008) – 5825 University Research Ct., the first new building at M Square, The University of Maryland Research Park in College Park, Md., is now open for business.
A grand opening ceremony for the $25 million, four-story, 120,000-square-foot Class A office building occurred this morning in space being occupied by the building’s debut tenant, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC).
About ESSIC
A joint center between the University of Maryland departments of Atmospheric & Oceanic Science, geology and geography, and the Earth Sciences Directorate at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, ESSIC studies how the atmosphere, ocean, land and biosphere components of the Earth interact as a coupled system and how human activities impact this system.
Its major research areas are studies of climate variability and change, atmospheric composition and processes, the global carbon cycle (including terrestrial and marine ecosystems/land use/cover change), and the global water cycle.
ESSIC occupies the entire fourth floor and half of the third floor of 5825 University Research Ct. for a total of 41,500 square feet of space.

5825 University Research Ct.’s construction team comprised Design Collective, Inc. as the architect, Manekin Construction as general contractor, SK&K as structural engineer, TOLK, Inc. as mechanical and electrical engineer, and Joyce Engineering Corporation as civil engineer.
Registered with the United States Green Building Council, the building is seeking a LEED Silver rating.
